4. Wrist exercises

4.1. Active-assisted wrist flexion and extension

Active-assisted wrist flexion and extension 


Movements strengthened: Wrist flexion and extension strength. 

Suitable for: 0-2/5 wrist flexion or extension strength. 


Instructions: 

  • Person seated or standing with elbow straight 
  • Press the back of the involved hand with the other hand 
  • Gently bend the wrist of the involved hand down
  • Hold for 5 seconds and then slowly press the fingers in a backward direction and hold for another 5 seconds
  • Repeat 10 times
  • For active-assisted movement, encourage as much independent movement as possible 


Where this movement should be felt: 

Person should feel this in their wrist and forearm muscles.

A person using their other hand to assist bending their wrist into wrist flexion and back into wrist extension
