5. Finger exercises

5.1. Active-assisted finger strengthening exercises

Active-assisted finger strengthening exercises 


For all exercises below, person should be in seated or standing.


1. Active-assisted finger flexion 


Movements strengthened: Finger flexion. 

Suitable for: 0-2/5 finger flexion strength. 


Instructions: 

  • Hold the involved finger with your other hand gently bend the finger 
  • Hold for 5 seconds and slowly straighten. Hold it for another 5 seconds 
  • Repeat 10 times

2. Active-assisted finger abduction 


Movements strengthened: Finger abduction. 

Suitable for: 0-2/5 finger abduction strength. 


Instructions: 

  • Spread the fingers and using the other hand, pull fingers further apart. Hold for 5 seconds and slowly return 
  • Repeat 10 times 

For active-assisted movement, encourage as much independent movement as possible. 


Where movement should be felt: 

Both exercises should be felt in the finger and forearm muscles
