5.3. Reaching for and grabbing objects

Reaching for and grabbing objects 


Movements strengthened: Finger, thumb, arm and shoulder strength. 

Suitable for: 3-5/5 fine finger movement, finger flexion, shoulder abduction and elbow flexion strength. 


Instructions: 

  • Person places their hand in a small bowl or rice or in sand 
  • Person should then try to make movements with their hand in the rice or sand 
  • Keep the hand moving for 30 seconds, making a fist or bringing together and separating fingers and thumb
  • Repeat 5 times 


Where this movement should be felt: 

Person should feel this in their fingers, hand, forearm and shoulder muscles.
