Example exercises

9. Summary

Summary

  • It is important to explain exercises and the purpose of the exercises to the person, relating them back to the rehabilitation goals set by the person
  • It is important to demonstrate exercises using the correct technique and let the person practice them with you, providing feedback on technique
  • When the person is practicing the exercises, monitor the person’s symptoms by asking the person and observing them
  • Teaching the person and their caregivers how to perform exercises at home is a very important part of providing a muscle strengthening exercise program
  • It is important to be aware of common misconceptions people hold when doing muscle strengthening exercises. Most importantly, people should not be in pain and need to give muscles time to recover
  • There are many different exercises that are applicable for each movement and grades of strength assessed. Many exercises can be adapted for differing levels of strength, being familiar with a range of exercises and how to adapt them for different levels of strength takes time but will help deliver the best possible care for your clients
